Location Cusco & Sacsayhuaman
Date June 24th (Annually)
Highlight The VIP Imperial Viewing

June 24th marks the winter solstice in the southern hemisphere—the shortest day and the longest night of the year. For the ancient Incas, this astronomical event was a moment of deep anxiety; they feared the sun (Inti) was abandoning them. To ensure the sun's return and secure a fertile harvest, the empire hosted its most magnificent ceremony: the Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun).

Today, the Inti Raymi has been masterfully reconstructed based on historical chronicles. It is the second-largest festival in South America and an absolute masterpiece of theatrical production, featuring over 800 actors, dancers, and musicians draped in brilliant woven textiles and golden adornments.

"To witness the Sapa Inca raise his golden chalice against the megalithic stones of Sacsayhuaman is to watch the veil of time lift for a single, resplendent day."

The Three Acts of the Imperial Drama

The ceremony unfolds across the city of Cusco, following the exact route the ancient emperors took centuries ago. The spectacle is entirely spoken in Quechua, the language of the Incas, adding an incredible layer of authenticity.

  1. Act I: Qorikancha (The Temple of the Sun). At 9:00 AM, the Sapa Inca (Emperor) emerges from the golden temple, greeting the rising sun and inviting his subjects to join the celebration.
  2. Act II: The Plaza de Armas (Auqaypata). The royal entourage descends to the main square. Here, the Inca performs the "Coca Leaf Reading" to predict the fortune of the upcoming year, surrounded by the colonial architecture built over his ancestors' palaces.
  3. Act III: The Fortress of Sacsayhuaman. The climax. In the afternoon, the ceremony moves to the esplanade of the megalithic fortress. Here, delegations from the "Four Suyos" (the four regions of the empire) perform vibrant, acrobatic dances. The event peaks with a simulated llama sacrifice to appease the Sun God, followed by the lighting of the new fire.
Incan Actors at Sacsayhuaman Over 800 local performers spend months rehearsing the intricate dances and Quechua dialogues to bring the Incan Empire back to life.

The Luxury Inti Raymi Experience

Inti Raymi draws tens of thousands of spectators. Without expert curation, attending the festival can mean navigating chaotic crowds, extreme sun exposure, and poor sightlines. At Luxury Machu Picchu, we transform this monumental event into a seamless, VIP experience.

  • Premium Grandstand Seating: We exclusively secure VIP tickets in the Orange or Green zones at Sacsayhuaman. These covered grandstands offer the absolute best, unobstructed views of the central stage and protect you from the intense high-altitude sun.
  • Expert Bilingual Historians: Because the ceremony is in Quechua, you will be accompanied by a private historian guide who will translate the dialogue, explain the complex rituals, and provide deep archaeological context.
  • Gourmet Boxed Lunches: Instead of relying on crowded local vendors, we provide a sophisticated, catered boxed lunch prepared by one of Cusco's top culinary chefs, accompanied by premium beverages to enjoy during the main ceremony.
  • Seamless Logistics: We handle all private transfers between the Qorikancha, the Plaza, and the complex logistics of driving up to Sacsayhuaman amidst road closures.

Secure Your Imperial Access

VIP tickets for the Inti Raymi are strictly limited and traditionally sell out globally by February. We urge our luxury clients to contact our travel architects well in advance to guarantee their premium seats for the June solstice.
