Pachamama Raymi
Immerse yourself in the Andean month of Mother Earth. A profound journey of gratitude, healing, and ancestral mysticism.
Unlike other grand Peruvian festivals characterized by massive crowds and theatrical pageantry, Pachamama Raymi (Mother Earth Festival) is a deeply intimate, quiet, and profoundly spiritual observance. It is the purest remaining expression of the ancient Andean worldview, unclouded by colonial syncretism.
August marks the beginning of the agricultural New Year in the Andes. It is the height of the dry season, and indigenous communities believe that Pachamama (Mother Earth) is "thirsty" and tired from the previous harvest. Before the new seeds can be sown, the people must give back to the earth in a symphony of gratitude and reciprocity known as Ayni.
The Art of the Offering: El Pago a la Tierra
Throughout August, the mountains echo with the soft chanting of Altomesayoqs and Pampamesayoqs—the revered, high-ranking shamans and priests of the Andes. They orchestrate the Pago a la Tierra (Payment to the Earth), also known as a Despacho ceremony.
The Despacho is an ephemeral piece of art. On a bed of woven textiles, the shaman meticulously arranges natural elements: unblemished coca leaves (the sacred K'intu used to communicate with the mountain spirits or Apus), native seeds, sweets, animal fat, red wine (symbolizing blood), and chicha de jora (corn beer). Once the intricate mandala is complete and infused with the intentions and prayers of the participants, it is ceremonially burned, returning its essence to the cosmos.
The sacred K'intu: Three perfect coca leaves held together, representing the three realms of the Incan universe—Hanan Pacha (the heavens), Kay Pacha (the earthly realm), and Uku Pacha (the underworld).
A Bespoke Spiritual Awakening
For the luxury traveler, August offers a unique opportunity to transcend typical tourism and engage in high-end spiritual wellness. At Luxury Machu Picchu, we do not treat Pachamama Raymi as a spectator sport; we curate private, deeply personal experiences designed to foster mindfulness and inner peace.
- Private Shamanic Ceremonies: We arrange exclusive Despacho ceremonies with authentic Andean shamans. These take place far from the tourist trails, in serene locations such as a private terrace overlooking the Urubamba River, or beside a crystal-clear, high-altitude lagoon.
- Coca Leaf Readings: Following the offering, the shaman can perform a traditional coca leaf reading, providing spiritual insight and guidance rooted in centuries of ancestral wisdom.
- Luxury Wellness Retreats: We seamlessly integrate these spiritual experiences with stays at the Sacred Valley’s premier wellness lodges (such as Tambo del Inka or Sol y Luna). Here, your cultural immersion is complemented by world-class spa treatments using local Andean botanicals, yoga sessions facing the mountains, and organic farm-to-table gastronomy.
