Puno Week & The Inca Origin
Witness the mythical birth of the Inca Empire on the shimmering, sacred waters of the highest navigable lake in the world.
For the Andean worldview, Lake Titicaca is not merely a high-altitude body of water; it is the mythological womb of civilization. While Cusco represents the administrative and architectural zenith of the Inca Empire, Puno and its vast, sapphire-blue lake represent its sacred beginning.
Every November, the city of Puno celebrates its founding anniversary with a week-long festival. The absolute climax of this celebration occurs on November 5th, with a monumental, theatrical reenactment of the most famous legend of the Andes: the emergence of Manco Cápac and Mama Ocllo from the depths of Lake Titicaca.
The Legend of the Golden Staff
According to the chroniclers of the 16th century, the Sun God (Inti) looked down upon the earth and saw that humanity was living in a state of chaos and barbarism. In his mercy, he created his son, Manco Cápac, and his daughter-wife, Mama Ocllo, placing them on the Island of the Sun in Lake Titicaca.
Inti bestowed upon them a golden staff and a divine mission: they were to walk north, testing the soil. Where the golden staff sank effortlessly into the earth, they were to build the capital of a new, enlightened empire. (This journey ultimately led them to found the city of Cusco).
The actors portraying the first Incas cross the bay of Puno on massive, beautifully constructed traditional boats made entirely of woven Totora reeds.
The Grand Theatrical Reenactment
On the morning of November 5th, history is vividly recreated. Hundreds of actors, dressed in pristine, historically accurate Incan regalia, board massive traditional reed boats (balsas de totora). The "first Incas" slowly navigate across the bay of Puno, escorted by a flotilla of local fishermen and musicians.
Upon reaching the shores of the city, Manco Cápac addresses the gathered thousands in Quechua, delivering a powerful message of unity and reverence for the earth, before initiating a grand parade through the streets of Puno accompanied by vibrant highland dances.
