The Snow Star Festival

Embark on the ultimate high-altitude expedition to witness the largest and most profound indigenous gathering in the Americas.

Location Sinakara Valley, Cusco
Time of Year May / June (pre-Corpus Christi)
Elevation 4,600m to 5,200m (15,000ft+)

This is not a festival for the faint of heart; it is a profound spiritual expedition. While the coastal cities and Andean valleys celebrate with wine and warmth, Q'oyllur Riti (The Snow Star) takes place in the unforgiving, freezing heights of the Sinakara Valley, at the base of the sacred Mount Ausangate.

Once a year, over 100,000 indigenous pilgrims from across the Andes trek into this glacial basin. For the intrepid luxury traveler, witnessing Q'oyllur Riti is the closest one can get to stepping back in time to observe the raw, unadulterated devotion of the Incan Empire, masterfully veiled beneath the imagery of Catholicism.

"At 15,000 feet, where the air is thin and the night temperatures drop below freezing, devotion is no longer just a concept—it is a physical act of endurance."

The Syncretism of the Snow Star

Officially, the pilgrimage honors the Señor de Q'oyllur Riti (an image of Christ that miraculously appeared on a boulder in the 18th century). However, the roots of the festival are ancient and undeniably pagan. It corresponds with the reappearance of the Pleiades constellation (Qullqa) in the southern hemisphere, which marks the beginning of the Andean harvest season.

The pilgrims come to pay homage to the Apus (the mountain spirits) and Pachamama (Mother Earth). The valley transforms into a massive, organized camp of "Naciones" (delegations from different Andean regions), each dancing ceaselessly for days in intricately beaded costumes to the sound of drums, flutes, and brass bands.

The Ukukus: Guardians of the Glacier

The most fascinating figures of Q'oyllur Riti are the Ukukus. Dressed in thick, shaggy wool tunics and wearing knitted masks, they represent a mythical creature that is half-man, half-bear. They act as the spiritual guardians and the strict "police" of the festival (alcohol is strictly forbidden at Q'oyllur Riti).

Their ultimate task occurs in the dead of night. Thousands of Ukukus scale the sheer face of the glacier to perform secret rituals on the ice. Historically, they would chip away massive blocks of glacial ice to carry back down on their backs, believing the meltwater held miraculous healing properties. (Note: To protect the receding glaciers, the removal of ice has been restricted in recent years, but the ascent remains a breathtaking spectacle.)
