No journey to Arequipa is truly complete without discovering the very origins of its magnificent architecture. The "White City" owes its name and brilliant aesthetic to *sillar*, a luminous volcanic tuff stone formed millions of years ago by massive eruptions. This exclusive half-day private expedition takes you outside the city limits into the district of Cerro Colorado, where you will explore the towering, surreal landscapes of the sillar quarries.

Guided by an expert, you will navigate the monumental mega-cliffs of the Añashuayco Quarry, where you will interact directly with master stonemasons and even try your hand at carving the volcanic ashlar. The journey then delves into the dramatic Culebrillas Ravine, an untouched, sinuous natural canyon. Here, you will take an immersive walk between undulating white walls to discover enigmatic ancient petroglyphs carved directly into the cliffs, connecting the region's geological power with its deep ancestral roots.

Volcanoes and Stonemasons

Duration: 4 Hours (Morning or Afternoon Departures)

1. Private Pick-up & Scenic Drive

Your private driver and guide will collect you from your hotel in Arequipa. We embark on a comfortable 45-minute (14 km) drive northwest to the district of Cerro Colorado, transitioning from the historic center into impressive, rugged natural volcanic landscapes.

2. Añashuayco Quarry Exploration

Our first major stop is the spectacular Añashuayco quarry. Walking along the base of towering white sillar cliffs, you will be amazed by the sheer scale of the site. Your guide will show you massive murals, local shields, and impressive stone sculptures carved directly into the cliff faces by the quarrymen.

3. Master Stonemason Demonstration

Here, you will meet the local artisans who keep this ancient craft alive. You will observe up close the arduous process of manually extracting large blocks of stone from the mountain. To complement the experience, you will receive a live demonstration of traditional cutting and carving techniques—and you are invited to grab the tools and try it yourself!

4. Hiking the Culebrillas Ravine

Next, we drive to our second destination: Culebrillas. Unlike Añashuayco, this ravine has not been exploited for extraction. You will embark on a continuous 40-minute walk through a sinuous, narrow canyon with undulating sillar walls. As we navigate the ravine, your guide will point out ancient petroglyphs engraved on the cliffs, left behind by the early cultures of the region.

5. Return to Arequipa

After an active and highly visual half-day of exploration, you will board your private vehicle for a relaxing drive back to the city. We will drop you safely at your hotel or a centrally located restaurant of your choice.
